Book Review:

Description:
This is the 10th edition of the "Small Robbins," which has been updated and revised to provide medical students with a "readable, well-illustrated and concise overview of the principles of human pathology." Accompanied by a user-friendly electronic version and additional learning and evaluation resources on its website, this edition is well positioned to remain the highest ranked as the most widely available.

Aim:
This abbreviated version of Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Condition Basis has been widely popular with both medical students and their professors since its first edition in 1971. His focus was and continues to be on synthesizing basic anatomical anatomy information with disease clinical presentations. Students are given a good glimpse into the pathogenesis of those lesions to help them understand the pathological changes. Current fundamental science results are continually revisited and there is relentless focus on the integration of pathology and other preclinical medical sciences. Students are taught pathophysiology to recognize the physiological causes and are thereby presented with a systematic response to the most important and typically paradigmatic diseases. This is perhaps one of the most valuable things they are learned in their medical schools and we as teachers just hope they can follow this method carefully and faithfully for the remainder of their professional lives. Presenting these lessons in an online format is definitely the easiest way to attract as many students as possible and particularly those who are more relaxed with the online than the print book.

Intended Audience:
This book has been in use for over 50 years, and so any summary would be superfluous. Suffice it to say it is a new edition of the classic original. Like its predecessors, this is written for "busy college students" and I agree that within the first two years of their academic education, only the slowest of slow readers will get through its 900 pages. Since the day of our first meeting I suggest this to my medical students and later I keep asking them to start reading. I will also note that reading it is their greatest time commitment for all three areas of the USMLE and for the remainder of their professional lives.

Characteristics:
The book is divided into 24 chapters covering the most critical areas of general and special pathology, all of which have been updated, revised, corrected and improved where appropriate. The book reads well and is written in a very appealing way, emphasizing the excellent features and presenting the key points in the form of boxed summaries. Every chapter's highlights are the schematic color illustrations, all of which have been freshly updated for this edition.

Selected references at the end of each chapter are annotated to inspire interested students to search for more in-depth reading.

Study:

Somewhere I read that the main Robbins & Cotran textbook is the book most medical students carry for life in their shelves. I grew up reading it and that's now my favorite book on pathology. Let's be rational, though, and allow our medical students a break-for most of them, reading the "big Robbins" during their two preclinical years will be virtually impossible. So we have to settle for the second best, and that is this book. So far as I'm concerned, I 'd be delighted if my students even learned half of what's in this novel. I always try to be fair though, referring to a good friend of mine, who told me to "keep reading" in this case, and I do, but I also nudge my students to read it. How could they bypass it on their way to the clinics with all the wisdom and practical knowledge distilled in its pages; and even later, when it should be part of a learned reflection to revisit it when there are really tough clinical problems? Beautifully made, masterfully written and edited, critically reshaped and revised for the 21st century, for most pathology professors it remains the book of choice. I see it as an American classic, but also as a contemporary textbook for medical students of new generations. Recommended big.
