 Description:

The only anatomy atlas illustrated by physicians, Atlas of Human Anatomy, 7th edition, brings you world-renowned, exquisitely clear views of the human body with a clinical perspective. In addition to the famous work of Dr Frank Netter, you’ll also find nearly 100 paintings by Dr Carlos A. G. Machado, one of today’s foremost medical illustrators. Together, these two uniquely talented physician-artists highlight the most clinically relevant views of the human body. In addition, more than 50 carefully selected radiologic images help bridge illustrated anatomy to living anatomy as seen in everyday practice.
  • Region-by-region coverage, including Muscle Table appendices at the end of each section.
  • Large, clear illustrations with comprehensive labels not only of major structures but also of those with important relationships.

Book Review:

Description

This groundbreaking text is structured in a manner that discourages rotary memorization by stressing what functional groups do instead of how they are created, demonstrating mechanistic parallels, and tying together synthesis and reactivity. Bruice 's writing was lauded for answering questions from the students, contributing to their desires for visual and problem-solving. The text combines the scope with bio-organic chemistry with mainstream subjects, acknowledging the importance with bio-organic subjects to students today.

Editorial Overview

Of the organic chemistry textbooks mentioned here, Paula Bruice's textbook is unique in that its vocabulary is readily understood, and its many diagrams and well-crafted style give students an simpler approach to organic chemistry. The author herself points out that the subject should by no means be viewed as a foreign language in which one must learn to use thousands of reactions in a vocabulary. Rather, it is principles and interactions that can be communicated and can be extended in theory even to complex reactions – a role at which the author performs admirably.

The explanation for this is the very loose structure of the books, often by substratum, at times by form of reaction or particular subjects such as "bioorganic compounds." Therefore, the book is considerably less formal than equivalent textbooks, but at the same time avoids discussing complex reactions at the outset, as will certainly be the case for a more rigorous organisation according to groups of material. On the other hand, the reactions omitted in the early portion of the book later appear in a few chapters which as a result seem a bit busy.

The book addresses all main topics from orbitals, nomenclature, spectroscopy and reactions to natural materials, including an introduction to medicinal chemistry, for a simple course. Given its wide scale, however, it is appropriate only for simple analysis or when repeating the basics. The cogent descriptions of the types of reactions and exceptionally good illustrations serve their purpose well and make this a full text. However, this reviewer is convinced that this treatment is easier to work through than textbooks where only brief explanations are presented to hundreds of reactions.

This book focuses well on natural products and drug chemistry, so it provides the essential concepts required in more advanced biochemical or medicinal chemistry studies. For relevance to today's life sciences industry, exposure of students to interdisciplinary knowledge in their foundation courses is generally desirable. The level of detail in these chapters corresponds rather more to the needs of beginning students.

Paula Bruice's "Organic Chemistry" is an excellent textbook for beginning students, which explains the important basics of biochemistry and medicinal chemistry. This book will lay the foundation for a good course of studies and is highly recommended for its purchase.
